Cheltenham Renters Speak Out: Survey Reveals Pressing Concerns and Call for Action

Our recent survey of Cheltenham renters has shed light on the challenges faced by our community and the strong desire for change. With over 35% of Cheltenham households living in rented accommodation, it's clear that tenants' voices need to be heard.

Top Concerns: Affordability and Security

The survey revealed that affordability and security are at the forefront of renters' minds:

  • 78.9% cited unaffordable rent as a major concern
  • 47.4% worry about short notice, no-fault evictions
  • 42.1% are troubled by not being allowed pets
  • 42.1% face poor property conditions

One respondent emphasized the urgency of the situation:

"Put a stop to random rent increases and increase the notice period!"

Another shared a personal experience highlighting the precarious nature of renting:

"We have actually been asked to move from the property, despite me living here for 2.5 years with no issues, due to our dog (who visits on occasion and lives with my partners parents full time, as we have no garden here)."

Renters Want Council Action

An overwhelming 85% of respondents believe that tenants should be a council priority. When asked about voting intentions:

  • 50% would definitely vote for a pro-tenant council candidate
  • 30% would probably vote for such a candidate

Renters are also willing to take action, with 60% saying they would participate in coordinated efforts to contact the council about improving renter protections.

What Should the Council Do?

Our survey respondents have clear ideas about what actions the council should take:

  1. Prosecute rogue landlords and letting agents (90%)
  2. Register landlords (75%)
  3. Proactively inspect rental properties (60%)
  4. Declare rental properties to HMRC for tax purposes (60%)

One respondent highlighted the need for a nuanced approach:

"Short term lets in residential areas should be limited to a certain percentage rather than banned. And Cheltenham has too many luxury housing developments. There needs to be more incentives for affordable rent developments - especially for single renters such as myself who are effectively financially discriminated against in the rental market."

Looking Ahead

While 95% of respondents are not considering standing as independent councillors themselves, the survey shows a clear mandate for change. The Cheltenham Tenant Union will continue to advocate for renters' rights and push for council action on these critical issues.

One respondent's experience underscores the importance of our collective efforts:

"I fought off 8 section 21's in court after asking for repairs... In the end I successfully sued the landlord for disrepair and for stealing my deposit but the way I was treated in court and the whole thing has affected me."

As we move forward, we'll be using the email addresses provided to keep our community informed and engaged. Together, we can work towards a fairer, more secure rental market in Cheltenham.
