About us
Cheltenham Tenant Union: Collective Action for Better Housing
You are not alone in the Cheltenham rental market. You are one of almost 40,000 people—that's 35% of households—who rent their home in Cheltenham. We've all felt the pressure, the uncertainty, and the uphill battle of finding a fair deal.
At the Cheltenham Tenant Union, we believe it's time to shift the power. We've identified three key villains in the rental landscape—the council, the university, and short-term letting agents and landlords—and we are building a united front to challenge them.
Our Mission: What We're Fighting For
Our data-driven approach means we focus on what matters most to tenants. Our mission is to secure a fairer, more stable future by:
- Pushing for lower rents, with an explicit goal of capping rent at a maximum of 25% of household income.
- Guaranteeing security by ending no-fault eviction for good tenants.
- Lobbying the Cheltenham Borough Council to become proactive and use all its powers to address the housing crisis. After all, tenants pay council tax too.
- Addressing key market distortions, including the impact of student housing and the proliferation of short-term lets like Airbnb.
- Improving housing quality and availability across the borough.
- Enforcing responsibility on landlords and agents for timely and effective repairs.
How We Build Our Power
The strength of our union is in our numbers. We are building a collective, gravitational force that the institutions in power cannot ignore. Your participation is what makes us powerful.
